When pressing on Ajax legger press, there are creases on the pants which look like bad wrinkles. I just changed both the pad and grid plate. Why is this occurring?

A:
Are you noticing wrinkles on all types of fabrics or just lighter weight materials? If it’s lighter weight materials you may want to reconsider your grid plate. The Hi-Temp Fabric (without flannel) and Non-Stick Coated Grid Plates are the best for pressing lighter weight materials. If you are already using one of these grid plates, make sure that your vacuum on the buck is operating correctly.

Can press pads and grid plates be used on left or right handed machines?

A:
Yes, they are symmetrical and can be used on both. Also, right handed press means the narrow end is on the right (left hand, narrow end is on the left). The press pads also have the draw cord on the wide end. The legger press pads have the draw cord on the narrow end.

This product is a high-temperature/ heat resistant material. The material is converted into fabric. It is heat and flame retardant and is used in the dry cleaning as well as other industries because of its strength and endurance.

What causes “swirl” or “moiré” marks on garments after pressing on a new press pad, and how do you fix this problem?

A:
This problem is normally noticed on lighter fabrics, such as rayon. The reason for this occurrence is due to too much steam pressure coming from the top of the press. The top steam pressure should be shut off or reduced for about 3 weeks. As a press gets older the holes at the head of the machine get wider as well. More steam starts to flow from it. Because a new grid plate will function more efficiently, due to the fact that materials are more “breathable” and there is less starch, sizing or chemical build-up, the grid plate doesn’t need as much top steam to press. After about 3 weeks when the press pad isn’t as new, the top steam can be increased as necessary.

Will the Hi-Temp Grid Plates pick up lint or cause static?

A:
The Hi-Temp covers are made with an acrylic coating, so that there should be no friction caused by the grid plates. However, this protective coating could be removed if someone was rubbing it and trying to wash it.

What would cause a grid plate to “leak” water?

A:
Water coming from the head of the grid plate is typically caused by a bad or dirty steam trap, a bad or dirty check valve, or by the vacuum not working properly. Typically a water issue will be seen more with a Non-Stick Grid Plate, because unlike the Hi-Temp Grid Plate, there is no fabric to absorb the moisture. A grid plate does not cause a water problem.

How do you install a grid plate?

A:
The grid plates we carry all come with instructions. For safe installation, install grid plate when the steam has been shut off and the press is cold. First, detach the springs from the worn grid plate and remove the grid plate from the head of the machine. Next, clean the rust off the head of the machine, using a soft wire brush or a hot head mitt. Then, to install the new grid plate, fit the grid plate onto the press head. Place springs over the top and hook springs into the eyelets to secure the grid plate. After, bring the head down and secure it by locking it. Push and bend the edges of the grid plate around the head. This will ensure a tight fit and will eliminate steam escaping from the edge of the head.

This typically happens when pressing silks or thinner fabrics. The way to fix this would be to change from a Nomex grid plate to a Teflon grid plate.

What are the differences between Coated Non-Stick Grid Plates and High Temp Grid Plates?

A:
Cleaner's Supply currently offers two different types of grid plates. The Coated Non-Stick Grid Plate is ideal for silk, wool, denims, and other fine fabrics. It provides a crisp press. This grid plate has a special non-stick coated metal surface. There is a diffuser on the inside to provide an even steam flow and to eliminate jet marks. The smooth surface virtually eliminates lifting and rolling of garments. Our High Temp Grid Plate is generally used for all types of fabrics including wool, blends, knits and other synthetic materials. The cover is made of a high-heat resistant material. There is a diffuser on the inside to provide even steam flow and to eliminate jet marks. The cover reduces moisture and condensate. The high-heat resistant cover eliminates shine and moire.
