On April 10th, 1849 Walter Hunt patented the first safety pin, which he soon sold for a few hundred dollars. Needless to say the safety pins generated millions in sales over the years. Walter had quite a few inventions including the forerunner of the Winchester rifle, streetcar bell, stoves and ice ploughs. Hunt also built the first American sewing machine, but lost interest in patenting the sewing machine fearing the invention would cause unemployment.
