Why would a new press pad hold water, but when the old used pad is put back on it doesn’t hold water?

The reason a press pad would hold water is because the vacuum is not working properly, and is not effectively pulling the moisture through. An old used press pad may not have collected the water because it is compressed and hard and will not allow the moisture to settle anywhere, thus the excess moisture rolls off the sides. While the older pad may not hold the moisture, it is also not providing a resilient area to press on, and will not allow for a good steam flow.
