We get this question every once in a while. Some believe that its female garments (left) vs male garments (right), however there seems to be a mix of both men’s and women’s garments that have left handed zippers. Several forums online point to an older way of dressing for royalty (mostly European). They would have a handmaiden dress them and the zipper being on the left side would mean it’s much easier to zip up the jacket. This theory is still unconfirmed so we reached out to YKK to see if they can add any information. YKK stated that 99% of jackets made in the U.S. have zippers that are right handed. The standard in the rest of the world including Canada is left handed. When they have to order zippers from overseas, they have to specify the right handed zipper. So if your jacket is an import, you may be seeing a left handed zipper on the jacket. Cleaner’s Supply and Wawak both carry just right handed zippers.

A coat that has a separating zipper, separates, while zipped? Does it need to be replaced or are there any tricks that my save this zipper. I thought about spraying with silicone spray...wondering if this would help? Thanks in advance.

It sounds as if the teeth on the zipper are not locking like they should. The zipper will need to be replaced.

How do I make a zipper shorter?

A:
First you must determine whether you are shortening a separating or a non-separating zipper. To shorten a separating zipper, work the slider to the bottom of the zipper. Using needle nose pliers, remove the 2 top stops. Using end nippers, shorten the zipper to the desired size by making a small cut between the teeth or across the coils on both sides of the zipper. Remove the excess zipper tape with scissors. Apply two new top stops and sew zipper into the article of clothing. To shorten a non-separating zipper, work the slider to the top of the zipper. Can you make a 1-way jacket zipper into a 2-way?

A:
No, the teeth on a one way zipper chain will not allow for the proper operation of two sliders. You would need a two-way chain which are specially designed for 2-way operation.

Amazing Quality

These zippers by YKK are amazing and extremely robust. I've purchased many great generic zippers from my local fabric stores and none of them compare to the durability and quality of YKK. The quality can easily be felt with a single touch. If a blind-fold test were conducted and one was asked to select the best-quality zipper from YKK and other generic brands by only the touching and opening and closing the zipper, the YKK brand would come out on top. I'd definitely recommend this zipper to anyone.
